You need a systematic approach when evaluating a potential purchase. Skipping the details often leads to buyer’s remorse. Watch out for these specific red flags during your next inspection.

Hydraulic Health: Operate the boom or bed through its full cycle. Listen for whining pumps or chatter in the lines. Look for cylinders that drift down or weep fluid. Cold oil is thick oil, so issues often hide until the system is hot.
Structural Integrity: Get under the truck. Look for heavy rust scaling on the subframe and crossmembers. Fresh undercoating can sometimes hide rot so poke around the jacking points. Check the bed rails on carriers for warping.
Lighting and Electrical: Check the lenses on lightbars and work lights. If clear lenses have turned milky yellow or opaque, you are losing massive amounts of light output and facing an immediate replacement cost.
